The 2GB memory didn't work -- please help

    Hello...

I recently purchased the blue NC10 through Amazon.com last week. It arrived two days later and although the touchpad takes some getting used to, I couldn't be happier with the purchase.

I also ordered a 2GB memory card at the same time. Specifically, the Crucial 2GB DDR2 667 stick. It arrived about an hour ago and I tried to install it. I took out the old card and put in the new one, but when I went to start the computer nothing happened. It powered on but that was it. I adjusted the card several times -- making sure it was snugly fit in the slot -- and still I had the same problem. I finally put back the original card and the computer started up with no problems.

What could I be doing wrong? Is it the memory card itself... do I need to order a new one? Different version?

Any advice you could offer would be a big help. I am a novice (at best) when it comes to computers and technical stuff. Thank you

Ok. Please take a look at your new RAM, how many chips on it? 4, 8 or what?

By "chips" do you mean the little black squares that are on the card? If so, there are 8 of them.

Yes, that is what I mean with chips. So 8 of them you say. 8 in total or 8 on each side i.e 16 in total?

Well, then it should work. I have seen that double sided memory modules are the safest choice. I would suggest returning it for a refund and instead get a module that surely work, there is a thread about this (search the forum). I would recommend
Samsung modules if you can find one, or Kingston. I use a 2GB Corsair module myself (modelnumber: VS2GSDS667D2 G)

The problem with Crucial and Corsair (Value Select series) is that not all modules are the same. In my opinion and experience a safer choice would be Samsung or Kingston.

I bought my module in a computer store walking distance from where I live so I took a chance with the Corsair and it worked, if it wouldn't I could just change it in the store. Lucky me it worked, but another module from Corsair (or even Crucial) may not have worked.

Hope this info helps and that you can return the memory for a full refund.

When you say it was snug in in its slot, do you mean that the clips were firmly seated or that the contacts were well seated?

I ask as when I first inserted my Crucial 2Gb stick, the casing obscures part or all the the contact area of the slot.

I had an identical problem , the computer wouldn't boot and when I checked I found the bottom of the stick was laying on top of the sim slot, although the clips had snapped into place.

As soon as I rectified that it booted up.

I realise its a long shot as you put the original back in and it worked.
