Thread: Windows 7

    Windows 7

Anyone tried this on their Sammy?

Anyone stoked for this release like I am?

Read the Wikipedia articles for some cool info. Windows 7 will be more notebook oriented I think and has major goals of fast boot times and minimal battery drain.

I've been taking a look at some of the information regarding Windows 7. The new interface so far seems to be coming on ok (though nothing seems really new), the faster boot time and fewer resources is nice. So far though I'm not really all that excited by it.

What parts of Windows 7 are you looking forward to?

    Lower resources, better notebook utilization.
    Less battery drain.
    Nicer interface.
Powershell and .NET integration. (Cool stuff it is)
    Multitouch (meh, but still cool)
    More drivers.

If I install it and my fan goes hog wild, i'll be PO'd.

I use it from very first day I bought Sammy, start and shut time much better than XP,sleep and wake up time few seconds, almost instaneous , had to find LAN drivers, some side bar applets did not work, otherwise no way to come back to XP. All aero and super bar working nice.

I am trying to figure out where everyone is getting this UNRELEASED software? And is it fully functional?

I managed to get the pre-beta version of Windows 7 (and yours must be a pre-beta too), but haven't tried to install it. Does it have an expiration period, where you cannot use the OS after some time? Can you tell us where you managed to get the LAN drivers please?

I got mine from the Mininova site, a pre-beta release. Try to check if it is still available from there. Haven't tried installing them though, maybe some time. Also I'm not sure if they have expirations these pre-beta.

We got Windows 7 from a conference a few weeks ago. It's a pre-beta and just for testing, and we've been testing it on the various netbooks we have to see how it does on performance. So far on the NC10 it's fine, but there aren't drivers for a lot of things, including the battery management and screen brightness controls, so I haven't been able to properly test the battery.

I think I got either the ethernet or wi-fi driver from this forum -- it's the Vista driver. not all of the Vista drivers work with 7, though, much to my chagrin. (I'm sure they will come out with drivers when the software is released.)

I just really wish I could find a driver to make the function key on the keyboard work so I can turn the wi-fi off and adjust the brightness. If anyone finds a driver that works, pass it on, please!

In the meantime I've been working with Fedora 10. Windows 7 is nice, but as it's not ready for prime time with drivers and all, it's not very useful as a primary OS yet. (I suspect it will be in time.)

Before installing Win7 pre-beta, I have to prepare USB stick (over 2Gb)- made it bootable and copied instalation files on it, for making your USB bootable check web resources. After everything went more or less same as installing XP from flash stick.
The only soft I installed from Samsung was Easy display manager and Play Camera .LAN drivers found on manufacturers site, also used latest Synaptics drivers for Vista and 2-fingers scroll. Touchpad drivers included on Samsung CD caused to freeze touchpad responce, but latest 11.1.3.2. driver solved problem.
Without making any ticks system is responsive and fast enough.
Pre-beta suppose to work 30 days after nstallation, but "rearming" lets to extend trial period for next 30days , 5 times totally.
For those who want to make bootable usb, there is instruction:
2.1 Get USB stick over 1GB
    2.2 Start-Run-cmd
    2.3. type diskpart [press_enter]
2.4 in appeared window entering commands line after line [press_enter]:
LIST DISK (check your flesh disk position)
SELECT DISK 1 (1 is eq, see above)
    CLEAN
    CREATE PARTITION PRIMARY
    SELECT PARTITION 1 (1 anyway)
    ACTIVE
FORMAT FS=32 (if gives an error message after assign will request for format, formatting fat32)
    ASSIGN
    EXIT
your flash disk ready, copy pre-beta DVD content to stick and boot from it ( in bios have to choose proper boot order)
