The Unofficial Samsung NC10 Blog

in News

Hello! And welcome to my NC10 fansite! I am a 30 something year old guy living in the UK. Like most people my age I have grown up with a PC and the internet and have seen every step of the developing market first hand. My personal computer experience is probably very typical of my background:

  • Vic20
  • Spectrum 128k
  • Atari ST
  • Amiga
  • PC 486

So in the PC world I made my first online connections with a 56k modem giving my parents phone bill some abuse! University was a welcome experience when for the first time I had access to always on high speed connections. And as anyone my age will recall we had to pack up our massive CRT monitors into the car each term and zip down the motorway just so we could type up some essays in Word and play Action Quake over our house network.

Enter the World of Mobile Computing

I first came across the concept of ultra mobile computing when reading an article about the Asus eee PC. This opened my eyes to a whole new concept in laptops! Since then I have been tracking developments through the fantastic site UMPC Portal. The site owner is actually more a fan of MIDs (Mobile Internet Devices) – these are someone above a mobile phone but below a ultra mobile PC! But he still manages to keep a steady record of netbook development and I have been tracking the latest releases through this blog over the last year.

The Dream Netbook

Technology moves so quickly that if you keep waiting for the next release you will be waiting forever. So I decided to set out a list of requirements and purchase the first netbook that met them.

The netbook wishlist:

  • Plenty of storage space
  • Lightweight
  • Slick design
  • Wifi
  • Webcam
  • Good size keyboard
  • Hi-res screen
  • Great value
  • Long battery life

Many a cheap netbook has come and gone and been dismissed for one reason or another. Usually because of poor battery life. And this is one of the chief attractions of the Samsung NC10. Official stats suggest the NC10 has the best netbook battery life of any netbook so far. Up to 8hrs. Real world tests are required before we believe that but so far it looks promising!

Nice site mate, I had a slightly different mix of computers:
ZX81 with Wobbly 16k Rampack!
Toshiba MSX HX10
Spectrum +3
Acorn Electron
Atari ST
Amiga 500
Amnstrad 1512 with 10MB Hard Card! so much storage space!

hehe a very similar set though, its funny to think back at each break through and realise that some of the things we used will be incomprehensible to the next generation!

Loading games from tape! Those were the “good old days”. Or not!

I like Vista but XP suitably modded is fine

Probably one for a new forum thread but I’d be interested to know what XP mods people use. I feel a bit out of touch on that kind of thing!
