Early adopters of the Samsung NC10 sub-notebook will be well aware that the Samsung Update manage simply didn’t actually work. You’d search for updates that had be released via the web site and it continued to miss them time and time again!
But today something magical happened!
Update the Updater!
If you load Samsung Update Plus now and set it going, it should find an update for itself! On a default Sammy, you will find the updater application under Start -> All Programs ->Samsung -> Samsung Update Plus

4 New Updates
At the time of writing their are four published updates waiting for you:
- Bios
- Network Manager
- Webcam
- LAN
Note: For some reason owners are discovering that if you try to install more than one update at a time an error “NO STRING” is seen. The solution to this seems to be to install each update one at a time.

If anyone knows more about these updates and what has changed then please let us know!

The LAN driver (and BIOS) aren’t the most recent versions. There are more drivers on your NC10 which can be upgraded. I use DriverMax. This (free) tool not only offers more drivers for the NC10/XP, but they are also more recent than the few drivers that Samsung Update Plus offered begin this week.
I was aware that there were some later versions around – I wondered if there was a reason why Samsung hadn’t pushed these through the Updater though?
I got the “NO STRING” error after updating the updater. But if you do install one at a time, it does go through but the updater doesn’t download the necessary updates.
I then reinstalled the old version. Now it doesn’t even update itself.
I don’t think anyone had any luck with the old version. What happened with the new one? Mine took a while for the updates to actually install and others have reported the same thing. I was actually working on my desktop when I did it so I just patiently left my NC10 to do its thing. It looked like it was doing nothing for quite a few mins before actually working.
I found the same as Jez. By going one by one and letting the machine take its time, everything eventually loaded and updated.
I’ve had my NC10 for over a month now and haven’t used the ‘Network Manager’ application that came pre-installed. After applying the updates suggested by the update manager, the network manager no longer exists, though its shortcuts are still present. I guess that Samsung thought we didn’t really need their software; at least I hope that’s what happened. Has anyone else found this program has been removed?
I’ve only had my Sammy for 3 days (love it, love it, love it!) and when I went through the setup the “Samsung Update Plus” automatically updated itself (well at least I think it did). Anyway, after reading through this thread I decided to do the recommended updates one at a time as I received the “no string” message when I tried to click all three recommended updates. The first update took about 30 secs. Then I ticked the Atheros WLAN update……… Thinking, thinking, thinking, but no action. Left it for about 5 minutes and still no response.
So, I Goggled the driver name and version, and hey presto the link popped up for the Samsung website and the required driver link, except it was in a list for another Samsung notebook. Thinking this would be the way to go I searched for the NC10 drivers and a batch of updates for the NC10 appeared. I downloaded the Atheros update, and installed it promptly. I then did another update search on Update Plus, and the Atheros update had disappeared.
All a bit clunky, but job done.
cheers
Al
cool , good stuff Al. There is actually a forum thread with links to all the drivers for those that have probs with the proper updater! Check it out
I’ve a strange issue. The below updates appeared one day, I installed them all, but the Atheros WLAN driver update still continues to show despite the fact that the log shows it has been installed THREE times now.
* Bios
* Network Manager
* Webcam
* LAN
Does the NC10 come with any software like Microsoft Works?
It just comes with a trial virus scanner. However there is a great thread in the forum with loads of free office suite alternatives in it. Have a look through – there are some great products availble which will do a better job than Works (imo!).
WMSAAL suggested DriverMax.
On their web page is this:
After reinstalling Windows all drivers will be back in place in less than 5 minutes – sparing you of searching, inserting disc after disk and losing precious time. The Import Drivers wizard allows you to install all the drivers that you exported earlier. The entire operation might take up to 5-10 minutes.
Do you really have to reinstall Windows every time you upgrade your drivers using this program???
Thanks.
I would guess that it means that if you have resinstalled Windows you can get all of your drivers installed quickly and easily. I don’t think you have to install Windows though. That would make the use of the product limited. Just a guess though.
Todays atheros wlan xp driver update to 7.7.0.399 caused my wifi to stop working and on re-boot asked for the CD!
I had to do a system restore to get the wifi working again.
I have now turned off samsung update plus.
Any idea why the update does not work?
Hi Fivish, unfortunately the updates have not worked very well since day one. to be honest I’ve left it off for so long I couldn’t tell you if it has improved or not.
There are a few discussions in the forum around getting hold of the latest drivers and keeping your Sammy up to date
old updater can’t find its own update. displays WLAN & LAN drivers and Easy Resolution updates, but is unable to download them. I wouldn’t care too much, but it keeps popping up reminders that I need to install updates.
I love my Sammy, no problems in 10 months, but I do use it only on my own network, haven’t tried wifi hotspots yet.
never mind. the downloads just took forever and the Atheros driver update lost my router. the newest update was Magic Doctor Nov 09 and the screenshots don’t look like your sample.
I had the same problem with the Atheros WLAN update than FIVISH. Everything came back after restoring the sstem with the necesary back up prior to that. A pain. I don´t think I´m going to be updating anything else anytime soon. Thank you to all you posting things. I cannot believe Samsung are being so rubbish at this.
I had same problem and lost my wireless connection. Went on device manager and uninstalled drivers for both network adaptors (atheros and marvel yukon), then restarted comp. It automatically reloaded both the network adaptors and yay my wireless works again! Have vowed never to use Samsung update again!! (I know my solution sounds easy but i’ve spent all day farting about with it, including at one point being connected again but would only connect to my neighbours’ wireless!
how can i choose what exactly i have to delete TINA? You said u have uninstalled drivers for both network adaptors (atheros and marvel yukon). what are there names exactly in device manager? sorry for my stupid qstn :S
I can’t tell you how pleased I was to find this site! My NC10 was working fine for the past 12 months………then a Samsung update happened…….and the wi-fi disconnected never to connect again!
I really don’t want to have to lose everything by going back to day one (not that I know how to do that!).
If anyone can tell me what to do I would be so grateful. I wrote down what happened (& changed) I’ll dig it out and add details later. Thanks in advance!
The 2 updates were ;
Atheros WLAN XP Driver Update (version 7.7.0.329) Installed 2009/02/12
LAN Driver Update (version 10.69.2.3) installed 2009/02/12
I lost my wi-fi connection immediately after those updates completed!
I (rather bravely, I thought) did as suggested by Tina and uninstalled both drivers. Whilst it now has located my network, it keeps bouncing that little yellow ball around saying it is aquiring the network address. Then….. nothing!
If anyone can help me get back online – please, please help! Cheers.
Ps – Marvel Yukon will allow me to ‘roll back’ the driver – then I am warned that it hasn’t passed windows logo testing. The other one states there is not a previous driver installed.
Hi Beth, you’re probably better off copying/pasting the above into a new thread in the forum- the quick questions area would be a good place to post it.
You might also be able to find previous discussions on this, I do remember that someone had a similar problem but reinstalling older drivers helped put things right again.
